This dissertation focuses on the use of innovative materials in the context of the furniture industry, specifically in the development and application of an extending table and storage system. The aim of the thesis is to analyse and evaluate the benefits, challenges and opportunities that these materials bring to improve the functionality, design and sustainability of furniture. The practical part could be created thanks to the long-term cooperation with Jelínek Nábytek s.r.o., based in Valašské Meziříčí, which focuses on the design process from first draft to real product. The subject of the final product was an extending table in various sizes and a storage system. The first part of the research was carried out, focusing on the construction, more specifically the strength and stiffness of the butt and mitre joints with the inserted slat. It was these two completely different pieces of furniture that were also the starting point for the application of an innovative material that would be durable yet meet current ecological and sustainability requirements. After extensive analysis, a completely natural product was selected - linoleum - which was tested and then compared with classically used materials such as high-pressure, petroleum-based laminates. This allowed the creation of a unique series of furniture, designed for both the Czech and foreign markets.
