Annotation in English This paper focuses on Czech immigrants who lived in the city of Chicago in the United States at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The work is divided into three chapters. The first chapter describes the reasons for emigration and provides examples of the first Czechs in Chicago. The second chapter presents important Czech neighborhoods, individuals, and organizations and their influence on the Czech community's social, cultural, and political life. It also mentions how Czechs from Chicago and throughout America supported the independence of the Czechoslovak Republic during World War I. The third chapter provides a more detailed introduction to the most famous Czech in Chicago, Anton Cermak, who became a successful businessman, an icon of the Czech community in Chicago, and the city's mayor.
