The primary goal of this comparison of advertising in magazines, focused on women and men, is to obtain information about the model of development of printed advertising in Czech republic (and how increases or decreases the investment to printed advertising), localize the specifics of advertising aimed at women and men (the graphics and the gender aspects of advertising images of men and women in this kind of magazines) and describe the influence of this development on the mentioned magazines (together with the money invested to printed advertising). Methodology of this study is based on quantitative and qualitative analysis of advertising in three Czech magazines (two magazines for women and one for men).
The main research hypothesis of this bachelor thesis says: ‘‘Printed advertising in Czech magazines for women and men contains sexist message.‘‘ The quantitative analysis of the selected magazines shows that a difference between the advertising for women and men exists in appearance of categories of products and services. Women and men are in selected example of advertising often depicted in stereotypical gender roles. Results of the qualitative analysis also verified the main hypothesis of this research. Sexist advertising presents above all women. Woman was in the selected magazines very often depicted as a simple decoration or eye-catcher. Women are quite often portrayed in comparison with some product or presented as something similar to the product. The text and the graphics suggested that women (just as the product) are easy to buy. There were even cases, where the text and the graphics of the advertising gave offence to women and represented them in a derogative way.
The main hypothesis of this research was fully validated by the presented analysis. The magazines for women and men in this research were selected by logical consideration, using the method of purpose-built samples. This means that the results of the presented analysis are not valid for all Czech women‘s and men‘s magazines.
