Záznam průběhu obhajoby
The student presented his thesis.
Q: Are there other options that would allow you to avoid using common Czech?
A: I chose the colloquial Czech to make it more realistic and to keep the text more coherent.
Q: Why does Kantůrek set his translation in medieval Bohemia? (e.g. as mentioned on p. 29) Discuss linguistic (or other) advantages and / or disadvantages of this choice.
A: I think it is only a speculation, but I think that Kantůrek had an official permission from Prachet to change it. In my opinion the translation should be as equivalent as possible. I think it is connected to the setting and it influences the reader and the audience.
Q: Can you quickly summarize differences between your translations of proper nouns (especially character names) and Kantůrek’s tendencies?
A: I think is it not as precise as it could be and better alternatives can be suggested.
Q, Nemčoková: Lack of precision?
A: Maybe.
Q, Nemčoková: Did you read the translation first?
A: Yes, I believe I was influenced by the Czech translation, but when dealing with the Czech translation I tried to be objective, I wasn't looking for alteration if it was not needed, that is why the translations are similar.
Q, Mengel: On one hand you described that the translation is set in medieval Bohemia. You keep saying equivalence. People talk about target-oriented approaches. I think this is a target-oriented approach. Does the equivalence become more problematic? What do you mean by equivalence?
A: I understand that by setting the universe into the alternative Czech Bohemia he was focusing on the Czech reader, however I think that if I take into account it is a comedy, not a fantasy in most aspects, British comedy and characteristics are present, I think the setting should stick with the British audience. For the theoretical part I chose Dagmar Knittlová who emphasizes equivalence.
