The Chinese community in California is the largest community in the United States. In the second half of the nineteenth century, due to a variety of push and pull factors, Chinese began immigrating to California in large numbers. Some of them later returned home, but the majority stayed and started new lives. They established their own neighborhood in San Francisco called Chinatown, where they continued to maintain their customs and traditions. Their life in the United States was not easy, as they repeatedly fell victim to white American racism and exploitation, as well as to the nativist impulse that repeatedly reared its ugly head, to the community's detriment. But through it all, the Gold Rush, the mining, the railroad construction, the Gilded Age, the Progressive Era, the Great Depression, World War II, and the rise to power of communists in China, California's Chinese community survived, laying the foundations for the vibrant, yet unique American community it is today.

Záznam průběhu obhajoby
The student presented her thesis.
Q, Bell: Can you tell us what influence the visit of Sung Mej-Ling, if any, had on
the relationship? A: Chiang Kai-Shek couldn't speak English and that's why he took
advantage of her and sent his woman, so she could ask for help from the Americans. It was
better to send someone who could speak English and communicate with
the Americans. Q, Bell: How was she received, and what impact did her visits
have? A: At first she was received well, she asked for help, but
finally there were some kinds of arguments and she did not succeed,
that is why Communists in China won against the Nationalists.
Q, Sampey: It was 100 years, any specific social or cultural changes during that time? Use specific examples, events, cultural traits, that would take the thesis more toward a specific analysis.
A: In the beginning, Gold Rush, as cheap labour. They wanted to survive, they build Chinatown to keep traditions, culture, but they were perceived as a lower class and were discriminated.
Q, Bell: Do you think the Chinese were unique in forming their unique community?
A: The Americans viewed them as an exotic community.
Q, Bell: But what about other communities? During the Gilded Age?
A: Most melted with the Americans.
Q: Slovak community, Slovak, and others, what about little Italy in New York? Russian community in California.
A: I thought you meant only California.
Q: I think you don't see it in a broader picture what happened during the Gilded Age and the Progressive Era.
Q, Mengel: What do you think was your angle under which you were analysing and structuring this information? Do you have some special points in your thesis, or is it only a depiction of the community in California over the years.
A: I wanted to find out what was the development of the Chinese community there. Two years ago I went to Chinatown and learned what was the reason why they built it so I thought it would be interesting to find material and start working on the bachelor thesis. I wanted to find out the overall development and why they built the Chinatown.
Q, Mengel: The reason I'm asking is that I have the impression you are like and overflowing vessel, but I did not find in which direction this information was going.
A: It was hard to make this presentation.
Q, Mengel: If you had a point in one or two minutes, it would be it. But you have a lot of information and more and more.
