Záznam průběhu obhajoby
The student presented her bachelor thesis.
Q: Why did you say that abortion made Georgie powerful?
A: She got pregnant with Martin, his wife could not have children.
Q: Kašpárková: For what reasons was Iris Murdoch after publishing Under the Net placed in the same category as the Angry Young Men?
A: It was group of authors in 1950s in UK, their political attitude was left oriented, and in the Murdoch´s novel we find left wing character.
Q: Kašpárková: Explain the claim that Honor Klein from A Severed Head was a collector of heads.
A: She was an anthropologist, the story develops around her and she is highly influential with men, she studied primitive tribes that were collecting heads. Heads mean power here.
Q: Fonfárová: Can you show what version of Murdoch’s novels you used when working on your thesis? Why is it necessary to use a reliable (preferably printed) edition published by a quality publisher for scholarly work?
A: When I was working on my thesis I used electronic version by Penguin and lately Google books, as it is very difficult to find originals in Zlín. It is important to use printed sources to use bibliographic data and moreover there might be mistakes in electronic version as someone might have rewritten it.
Q: Fonfárová: Which other novels by Murdoch deal with the same issues and might be included in an expanded version of your thesis? Why did you choose only the two novels?
A: Longer version of my thesis would include Unofficial Rose, as it has similar features and The Sea, the Sea. I really like how the titles are connected to the content.
Q: Emonds: Does the powerful woman mean to be unfaithful and independent?
A: In my opinion, powerful woman must be independent and has to be able to express her own opinion.
Q: Bell: Your conclusion is not surprising as it was written in 1950s and 1960s.
A:Yes, but Murdoch wrote from the man point of view, that was interesting.
