Záznam průběhu obhajoby
The student presented her bachelor thesis. Q: Trčková: In the summary you stated that the analysed speeches differ in many aspects but still certain parallels between them can be traced. Can you be more specific here? What kind of parallels did you have in mind? A: The politicians start with personal story to persuade the audience and hence use more idioms. Q: Trčková: Were you able to identify particular features of the analysed speeches as style markers or particular characteristics of the speakers specific idiolect? In other words, based on your analysis, is it possible to characterize each politician as a particular type of speaker? A: It is possible, but I would have to analyse more speeches, they are prepared and are prepared by experts mostly. I did not really find any specific thing. Q: Your analysis has three levels/dimensions - lexical, semantic and pragmatic. Can you specify in what particular way did the pragmatic dimension enrich your results? In what way do idioms reflect the speaker meaning? How more gets communicated than said via idioms? A: It was not really clear what they wanted to deliver by idioms. They give impression they are the representatives of people. Idioms were not the main things that make speeches interesting. Not many opaque idioms were found there. They sometimes use them by accident. Q: Fonfárová: Can you name and specify any other persuasive devices used in political speeches, outside those defined on p. 20? A: Idioms in political speeches, allusion, plural form we. I did not find idioms to be part of these persuasive devices. Q: Fonfárová: Political speeches are not a typical area for using idioms. Name areas where idioms are used frequently and provide some examples. A: They are part of every aspect of speech, in everyday speech, in tabloids, it is difficult to say in which style it is most used. Q: Bell: Your speeches were politically different, did you take this into account, may this fact influence the usage of the idioms? A: I did not. Yes they are influential. Q: Trčková: Are phrasal verbs subtypes of idioms? A: Yes, as phrasal verbs are part of dictionaries of idioms. They are informal, that is why I included them.
