The economic and ecological trend in reducing costs of building operations caused growing importance of modelling and simulation of these systems in recent years. This work is, therefore, focused on the validation process of the simulation software COMSOL Multiphysics. This software is used for the heat transfer calculation in this work, although it is not specialized only in this effect. The software allows calculation of multiphysic systems (coupling and simulation of more physical effects in parallel), but it also offers the possibility of creating models connected to the MATLAB environment to control the specific model parameters.
The analytical part consists of a theoretical introduction to the heat transfer in buildings, and presents reasons for focusing on the COMSOL Multiphysics. Finally, it brings a brief illustration of numerical solution of differential equations.
The practical part is focused on three basic validation steps, which connects the theoretical background with the creation of practical models. The simulation outputs of the COMSOL Multiphysics software are compared with the analytical results (analytical verification) as well as with the results from other simulation software (comparative test), and finally to the experimental results (experimental verification).
As a conclusion of the test results the COMSOL Multiphysics is successfully validated with minor deficiencies when using for the calculation of the heat transfer by radiation, which brings problems with calculating the heat transfer by radiation between the internal wall surfaces.
