Postavení podniků v rozvíjejícím se tržním hospodářství je velmi složité. Na domácích i světových trzích existuje silná konkurence, která se však rychle mění. Firmy přicházejí, odcházejí, mění se zákazníci. Současně se rychle rozvíjí nové technologie a výrobky. Aby podniky uspěly v současném i v budoucím konkurenčním boji, je třeba změnit jejich systém řízení, strukturu i chování na trhu. Všechny procesy probíhající v podnicích je třeba řídit. Významným východiskem řízení jsou informace. Úlohu získávání, třídění a vyhodnocování informaci plní právě účetnictví, které je základním zdrojem informaci o ekonomických procesech. Poskytuje informace jak pro management podniků, pro akcionáře, ale i pro externí uživatele, mezi které patří například investoři na kapitálovém trhu, obchodní partneři, banky, stát, věřitelé apod. Dobře vedené účetnictví, správně sestavená účetní závěrka a výroční zpráva poskytuje informace i signály o stávajících a budoucích obtížích jednotlivých podniků.

At present, demands on the business management have been increasing. This is due to a big competition in the market economy. A prerequisite for a successful management is acquiring and using information. It is accounting that is an important source of information. It is an activity comprising the acquisition, classification, and assessment of information on economic processes. It provides information to the business management, investors, business partners, banks, the state and like. In acquiring the information, basic financial reporting is used, namely, a balance sheet, an income statement, a cash flow statement. To complete this a supplement a financial statements is used. All the statements are linked up with one another. The profit is an important indicator for the assessment of the enterprise. Information on its amount and composition is given in the income statement. In the double - entry bookkeeping the profit reported does not equal the amount of cash. This is because cost and income that arise in the enterprise do not always mean a decrease or an increase in the cash. The enterprise can make a profit and have little cash. Information on the cash is given in the cash flow statement. The balance sheet gives information both on the state of the enterprise possessions and the sources of financial them. In the supplement to the financial statements, there is information on facts that have significantly influenced the business activities of the enterprise.
