Introduction, skin whitening, skin whitening advertisements, African-American women in skin whitening advertisements, African-American men in skin whitening advertisements, 1960s changes in skin whitening advertisements, conclusion
Questions: Čechová: Did the motivation for skin whitening change from 1940s to the present days? Why do African-American women still whiten their skin nowadays? S: Early on it was to assimilate whereas nowadays it is a matter of personal beauty. Many women consider white skin more beautiful. Čechová: Six ads from the earlier periods (as shown in the appendix) portray a woman involved (or getting involved) in a conversation. Later periods show none such poses of portrayed women. What does it suggest about whitener users? perception of lighter skin? S: The women in the early periods where put into a position with an AA male. There was this notion that lighter skin will bring her love or a relationship. This disappeared later. Instead the sense of beauty is important just for her. Bell: You suggest that black men prefer white women or lighter skinned women. Is it true? S: I think it is based on a stereotype. Bell: Do you agree with Barbara J. Fields that race/racism is still America?s defining characteristic, or do you agree with William Wilson that class has now surpassed race in importance? Why? S: I think I will go with Barbara Fields. It is still race. Race and racism are still there. It is not so vivid as in the past. Bell: Is there a strong relation between race and class in the US? S: Yes, there is. The whites are still the top of the hierarchy.
