Annotation in English This thesis explains the historical reasons for the implementation of racial segregation in the United States in the late nineteenth century and then charts the development of segregation over time, ending in 1954 when school segregation was declared unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court. Ultimately, it will argue that ?separate but equal? was a flawed concept that needed to be cast aside.
