This Bachelor Thesis focused on identification of gender stereotypical expressions in Czech print advertisements. The theoretical basis for this work is Goffman’s study from 1979 which deals with unequal relationships between men and women and their social positions in social power hierarchy displayed in advertising images. A total of 300 randomly selected advertisements from Czech lifestyle magazines were examined by using Goffman’s framework. Further, individual gender stereotypes were analysed and compared with Goffman’s findings. The results showed that although some of the Goffman’s categories are disappearing, traditional negative and unequal representation of women still dominate in Czech print advertisements. The findings revealed that Czech advertising mirror the changes in social gender roles in our society, however, stereotypes described in Goffman’s study more than thirty years ago are still prevalent.
