Course content
Lecture topics: 1. Introduction to pharmacology - basics of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, drug interactions, adverse effects. 2. Drugs affecting the CNS - general anaesthetics, hypnotics, antiemetics, antiparkinsonian drugs, antiepileptics, analgesics (opioids), psychotropic drugs. 3. Drugs affecting the autonomic nervous system - basic effects of the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems. Drugs influencing the heart and blood vessels, antihypertensives. Drugs impacting the heart and blood vessels, diuretics, hypolipidemics. 4. Drugs affecting blood disorders, respiratory system, and digestive system. 5. Drugs for nutritional supplementation, vitamins, and minerals. 6. Drugs for endocrine system disorders (treatment of thyroid and gonadal disorders, contraceptives, antidiabetics). 7. Drugs for musculoskeletal system conditions (anti-rheumatics, analgesics). Alternative treatment methods. 8. Drugs for infectious diseases (antibiotics, chemotherapeutics, virostatics). 9. Drugs for the immune system and cancer treatment. 10. Drugs during pregnancy and lactation. Seminar topics: 1. Exposure and ways in which toxic substances enter the body, their distribution, biotransformation, and excretion. 2. The mechanisms behind chemical toxicity and clinical signs of intoxication. 3. Drug intoxication. 4. Addictive substance intoxication. 5. Inhalation intoxication. 6. Acid and alkali intoxication. Alcohol intoxication. 7. Heavy metal poisoning. Pesticide poisoning. 8. Substances that form methemoglobin. 9. Plant poisoning. Animal poisoning. 10. Principles of intoxication treatment, detoxification methods, both nonspecific and specific therapies, and elimination techniques.
