Course content
- Philosophy as a specific kind of knowledge, philosophical disciplines, key questions and problems of European philosophy, with special attention to the issue of social work. - Ancient philosophy - early Greek philosophy. - Ancient philosophy - Socrates and his maieutic. Plato, Aristotle. - Medieval philosophy: Descartes, Spinoza. - Modern philosophy: Immanuel Kant. - Philosophy of the 20th century and representatives - existentialism, phenomenology, hermeneutics - importance for health sector and social work. - The philosophy of the paradigm (Thomas Kuhn). Biotic convention. The philosophy of holism. - Ethics. Selected concepts of ethics, division of ethics, methods of ethics, ethical theories and their applications. Work ethics in relational and helping professions. - Historical European roots of contemporary medical ethics (Judaism, Christianity, Hippocrates' legacy). - Convergence and divergence of ethics in medicine, nursing and social work. - Subject, tasks and goals of ethics. Basic ethical principles in health sector and social work. - Ethical dilemmas and ethical problems in contemporary Czech healthcare. - Codes of ethics, their content and meaning. - Moral beliefs and ethical codes in the context of a pluralistic and multicultural society and a global world. - Human rights as an interface between law and morality. The process of developing patients' rights. - Human dignity and its ethical dimension. Individual components of human dignity and their ethical dimension. - The philosophy of dying. Ethical aspects of dying and death care. Charter of Rights of the Dying. Euthanasia. - Philosophy and ethics of palliative care. Codes of ethics in relation to palliative care. Ethical aspects of oncology patient/client care, case studies. Ethical aspects of the development of hospice care - current issues. Code of ethics for oncology patients. - Ethical aspects of child care. Declaration of the Rights of the Child. Rights of the hospitalized child.
