Why we translate and how to (critically) read a literary translation Theoretical foundations of literary translation: Historical overview The translation process: Phases of the translator's work Translation strategies: Simplification, explication, domestication and exoticization Translating fantasy: Neologisms, fictional languages, proper names. Translation of ciphers, deliberate spelling and grammatical errors, bilingual passages and foreign language elements Humour and translation: Conversational humour, irony, jokes, puns Translation of culture-specific metaphors, similes and allusions Translation of poetry: Rhythm, rhyme, euphony Translation of drama: Speakability, clarity and stylization
