Course content

1. Biochemistry, applications of biochemistry, the composition of living systems, interactions between molecules, basic energetic principles of living organisms. 2. Amino acids, properties of amino acids, peptide bond, protein, protein folding, description of 3D structure of proteins. 3. Enzymes, composition, cofactors, the principles of catalytic function, specificity, enzyme activity, basic enzyme kinetics, affecting the catalytic activity, regulation of activity, enzyme nomenclature, sources and use. 4. Vitamins. 5. Nucleotides, nucleic acids, structure, coding and structure of genetic information, expression of genetic information. 6. Lipids, properties, classification, nomenclature, biological membrane transport. 7. Carbohydrates, polysaccharides, structure, function, optical isomerism, formulas, properties, classification. 8. Bioenergetics, ATP and other energy-rich compounds, energy fixation. 9. Glycolysis, anaerobic metabolism, gluconeogenesis. 10. Lipid catabolism, beta-oxidation of fatty acids, fatty acid synthesis. 11. Citric acid cycle and functions, relationship to other metabolic processes, principles of metabolism regulation. 12. Respiratory chain, ATP synthesis on the membrane, alternative respiration. 13. Nitrogen metabolism. 14. Revision of metabolic survey, relationships of individual organs and tissues to the biochemical processes described.
