Course content
|
The course focuses on the history of design from the perspective of the development of science and technology. It presents key inventions that have influenced the development of industrial and graphic design in history (especially during the Industrial Revolution) and today. It will also focus on issues of development of design theory and methodology and the definition of the role of the designer. Course content 1) From prehistory to modern times - traces of the principles of modern production and its organization before the Industrial Revolution 2) The Industrial Revolution - the influence of the improved steam engine on the development of science and technology 3) The 19th century as an age of technology, invention and revolutionary ideas in design 4) The origins of modernism, Fordism, reductionism and rationalism 5) The machine as an object of design and inspiration - constructivism and functionalism vs. art deco and streamlining 6) Design and war 7) The plastic age 8) Space age, futurism, utopia 9) Miniaturization, digitalization and the transformation of the material into the "immaterial" 10) The age of computers and "smart devices" and their impact on the transformation of society and individual behaviour 11) 3D printing, rapid prototyping, parametricism and their influence on the shape of contemporary design 12) Future challenges for design and society in the light of developments in science, technology and society
