Course content
1. Footwear and its definition as an object that, in addition to its practical use, carries a high charge of information about lifestyle, craftsmanship and aesthetic sensibility in diverse territories and epochs 2. Prehistoric Europe (archaeological finds of footwear, shoe-shaped artefacts, tanning in prehistoric times) 3. The oldest surviving footwear in the world (Oregon wormwood shoe) and in Europe (Oetzi glacier man) 4. Ancient civilizations-Mesopotamia and Egypt (circumstantial evidence of the level of footwear on stelae and frescoes, evidence of ancient shoemaking and tanning) 5. Funerary footwear from the tomb of the Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamun 6. Ancient Greece and Rome (sandalion, endromis, carbatina, crepida, caligae, babylonica, kothornos) 7. Characteristics of shoe types and shapes in the 5th-10th centuries (Byzantium, Frankish Empire) 8. Reconstruction of the footwear of the Slavs during the Great Moravian Empire 9. Development of the shoemaker's craft in the 11th-15th centuries 10. Types and shapes of medieval footwear (scabbards, scarves, postols, patnochs) 11. Gothic footwear Soulier a la poulaine, Tripen slippers, tights 12. Hierarchy in the medieval shoemaking workshop (master, journeyman, apprentice), workshop equipment 13. The emergence of guild associations, their role in the development of the craft, guild rules and insignia, legends about the patrons of the craft
