Course content
In Preparatory Course, students form habits of regular independent English study, and also to consolidate language knowledge of grammar and vocabulary at B1 - B2 level during two semesters. The midterm and the final tests check their knowledge of the studied grammar and vocabulary which is necessary for the next English courses in the doctoral programmes. In Academic Writing, students master the terminology necessary for a researcher in a given area and then use it in context. Students improve their skills in working with authentic materials - reading comprehension (abstraction, deduction, summary, argumentation, etc.). The emphasis is placed on authenticity, grammatical accuracy and application skills. One part of the course is focused on writing a research paper for a journal based on the student's own research. The result is the final version of the article. Emphasis is placed on linguistic and stylistic aspects and typical features of individual sections of the research paper. In Technical Presentations, students learn skills necessary for oral academic presentation of technical topics in English and understand basic rules of an effective presentation: setting the purpose of the presentation and audience analysis, differences between written and spoken language, basic parts of a presentation and language means used in each of them, signposts, nonverbal communication, body language, visual aids. Further, students get acquainted with preparation and presentation of conference posters and other ways of communication connected with international conferences. Students have to study min. 200 pages of published text from authentic research recommended by the supervisor.
