- Microbiology of activated sludge I - Virusses and Bacteria. - Microbiology of activated sludge II - Floc-forming and filamentous bacteria in activated sludge, their types and importance. - Microbiology of activated sludge III - Filamentous bulking, foaming and other microbial troubles in activation process. - Microbiology of activated sludge IV - Fungi, Protozoa and Eucarya in activated sludges. - Microbial nitrogen and phosphorus removal from wastewater. - Microbiology of anaerobic processes. - Biosorption and biomethylation. - Disinfection of (drinking) water. - Microbial degradation of organic pollutants, terminology, key processes. - Factors influencing microbial degradation of organic pollutants. - Microbial treatment of waste air. - Bioremediation of contaminated soils, in situ and ex situ processes. - Bioremediation of contaminated groundwater, in situ and ex situ processes. - Composting. Laboratory exercises: - Obtaining bacteria degrading organic pollutants I, II, III, and IV. - Microscopic analysis of activated sludge I - basic analysis. - Determination of an ecotoxicity of wastewater using luminiscent bacteria. - Microscopic analysis of activated sludge II - identification of filamentous microorganisms. - Microbial cometabolic degradation of trichloroethene. - Assembly and verification of a laboratory biofilter for decontamination of air contaminated with toluene.
