Course content
Course content: 1. Introduction to design theory and methodology, definition of design 2. Intuitive methods of design work - the period before the Industrial Revolution 3. Industrial Revolution(s) and its/their influence on the formation of the design profession 4. The first theoretical treatises on design, design between art, science and technology 5. Efforts to reform design (Journal of Design and Manufactures, Arts and Crafts, W. Morris) 6. The beginnings of modernism (the revival efforts of the German Werkbund) 7. Methods of design work related to interwar functionalist modernism (Bauhaus, N. Pevsner, H. Read) 8. Design versus styling 9. Systemic methods of the 1960s (Hochschule für Gestaltung in Ulm, M. Asimow, B. Archer) 10. Critique of systemic methods (Ch. Alexander) 11. Current state of the art in the evaluation of design methods. 12. Design or redesign 13. Ethics of the design profession
