Course content
1. Theoretical explanation: Where cultural diplomacy originated and the belief in its importance; actors in cultural diplomacy from government agencies to museums; tools of cultural diplomacy and illustrations of their use in the 20th and 21st centuries (culture as a means of communication between the US and the USSR during the Cold War; minorities and the cultural diplomacy of their state, using the example of jazz exports; culture and authoritarian regimes). 2. Practical examples from the field of cultural diplomacy with an emphasis on the creative industries: Nation and city branding using the example of Paris as a city of romance and art; K-Pop and support for the film industry as pillars of Korean cultural diplomacy; Museums as actors in cultural diplomacy. 3. Student presentations - case studies of their own choice; discussion of current topics in cultural diplomacy (issues of postcolonial relations; cultural diplomacy and social media; measuring the impact of cultural diplomacy). 4. Excursion to Prague - visit to several cultural institutions.
