Course content
The aim is to introduce the development of the glass craft from the earliest documents to the High Middle Ages with an emphasis on its artistic component. New glassmaking techniques, processes and innovations throughout history, the evolving morphology of utility glass. In the Czech lands, the design of glass products is traced from the Bronze Age to Gothic glass. Students are also introduced to the most famous surviving glass works, discovering their inspiration and reflection in later artistic development. 1. Concept of culture, types of art, stages of art development. 2. The beginnings of glassmaking, characteristics of the craft, types of glass, prehistoric findings of glass in the Czech lands. 3. Ancient glass: Egyptian, Phoenician, Mesopotamian, Chinese, Greek glass. 4. Glass of the Latin Age, Celts, Roman glassmaking. 5. Early medieval glass: Frankish, Carolingian and Ottonian; glass of the eastern countries. 6. High medieval glass: Gothic and Eastern countries. 7. Venetian and Altar glassmaking. The student will gain an orientation in the history of glass production, recognize the oldest glass techniques and know the area and time of their origin. The student will have an overview of the development of the basic shapes of utilitarian glass and will be able to correctly name the different types and parts of utilitarian (especially drinking) glass.
