Course content
Course objectives: New film history - continued Thomas Elsaesser - "Louise Lumiere: The First Virtualist of Cinematography?" Topics: The virtual documentarism of Louise Lumier. Lumiere as the first film author. Louis Lumiere's films as a source of principles of 20th and 21st-century cinematography. Charles Musser - "The Nickelodeon Era is Beginning." Creating conditions for the Hollywood mode of representation. "Topics: The socio-technological context of cinema in the early 20th century and its impact on the development of film language. Hollywood narrative as a consequence of streamlining the production, distribution, presentation, and perception of film. Michéle Lagny - "The Construction Site of Film History: Socio-Cultural Practice." Topics: the history of cinema such as politics, sociology, representation, audience, distribution, actor, criticism, and press. Social sciences and the audiovisual - continued Kendall L. Walton: "Fear of Fiction." Topics: Fiction and Reality. Actor and non-actor. Experience the state. Pierre Bourdieu - "Introduction to the book Distinction: A Social Critique of Justice." Topics: Taste. High and low culture. The power of knowledge. Victor Turner: "Framework, Flow and Reflection: Ritual and Drama as Public Liminality." Rituals of modern society. Social roles. Subversion. Roland Barthes: "The Death of the Author." Topics: The Author as a Survival. The author as context. Historical changes in the status of the author. Technology as a co-author Bruno Latour and the phenomenon of a social actor.
