Contents: Early cinematography: modernity and the invention of film. Film of attractions, process of narrative integration. World cinematography since 1919. American film industry and silent film. German cinematography 20s - 40s French cinematography 20s-40s Cinematography of the Soviet Union 20s-40s Hollywood 1930-1960 Film ad state: Soviet Union, Germany and Italy, 1930-1945

Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to: - think critically about approaches to film history - describe the link between social development and cinema - explain innovations in audiovisual technology - understand the development of the history of world cinema from its origins to 1945 - analyse and interpret the works of selected authors

Students will be offered theoretical frameworks and analytical tools that will enable them to orient themselves in contemporary image-dependent culture. Key texts will be provided on individual topics.
