Course content
Lecture topics: 1. Microbiology - definition of the field, classification of microorganisms, microorganisms and the human organism, division of microorganisms. 2. Bacteriology - classification of bacteria, structure of bacteria, physiology of bacteria, growth and reproduction of bacteria, pathogenicity and virulence of bacteria, bacterial toxins, mycology, parasitology. 3. Special bacteriology - selected parts. 4. Antimicrobial agents, resistance to antimicrobial agents. 5. Properties and classification of viruses, interaction between viruses and cells, mechanisms of viral infections, treatment of viral infections. 6. Immunology - definition of the field, immune system, immunity, laboratory diagnostics. Clinical immunology, immunisation, vaccination schedule, healthcare-associated infections, their prevention and reporting. 7. Epidemiology of infections, anti-epidemic measures, hand hygiene, disinfection and sterilisation; principles of health protection for healthcare workers when providing healthcare.

- know the meaning of basic terms used in microbiology, immunology, and epidemiology; - interpret the results of microbiological laboratory methods in a basic way; - describe active and passive immunization for the prevention and prophylaxis of infectious diseases; - understand anti-epidemic measures for commonly occurring infectious diseases.
